In the 1970s, Formula 2 was still a true formula class, with various chassis builders and engine suppliers, resulting in visually and audibly diverse race cars. It’s this golden era that the Derek Bell Trophy and the Formula 2 Classic Interseries bring back to life today, complete with the raw engine sound that makes this historic category a crowd favorite at the Historic Grand Prix.

Nowadays, Formula 1 is essentially the only true formula class that remains. After all, the word “formula” simply refers to a set of regulations that a car must comply with to be eligible to race. In the past, each constructor had the freedom to interpret those rules as cleverly as possible. That is no longer the case for today’s Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Regional, and Formula 4. These have become spec series, with standard chassis and a single engine type. The difference now comes down to team preparation and strategy, designing and building a car is no longer required.
